The Northwest Development Agency (NWDA) is one of nine regional development agencies established by the government to develop the English regions.

The Agency’s main role is to drive forward the economic regeneration of the Northwest through encouraging the integration of funding regimes and coherence of the delivery of national, regional and local expenditure programmes.

The NWDA acts as advocate for the Northwest, forging a clear identity for the region through lobbying for resources and investment whilst supporting and maintaining partnerships, joining up initiatives and making the best use of the region’s resources. Through these initiatives, NWDA is now firmly established and well positioned to provide the region and partners with the leadership to bring about economic growth and prosperity.

The NWDA’s budget is currently £276m and will reach £300m by 2004. Working in conjunction with offices in all five Counties of the Northwest, providing practical solutions to local problems, the Agency directly influences £1.5 billion of economically focused expenditure every year in support of the delivery of the regional economic strategy.

Warrington 2000+






Warrington 2000+ is a major public-private partnership between Warrington Borough Council and private sector businesses in the area.

It owns and operates the International Business Centre, Warrington, a one-stop shop for business advice, support, guidance and trading opportunities. It also owns xpdia and operates the centre in conjunction with its partners, The Northwest Development Agency, Warrington Borough Council and Business Link Cheshire & Warrington.

Established ten years ago and led by the private sector, Warrington 2000+ has a 15-strong board and operates through a number of sub groups. These are either sectorally or geographically focused in order to promote Warrington and facilitate a dialogue between the Council and private sector businesses.

Subgroups are as follows:

Warrington Town Centre Partnership – made up of town-centre based businesses and those with an interest in the town centre

Birchwood Forum – for Birchwood-based businesses

Destination Warrington – a conference bureau with a membership comprising all the major hotels in Warrington and the surrounding area

From its base in the International Business Centre, the Economic Development Team of Warrington Borough Council works together with partners to achieve sustainable, annual growth in Warrington. Work of the team includes activities to promote the town, facilitate trade with Warrington businesses and attract inward investors as well as offering a number of services to businesses, both new and existing.

Economic Development Services include the following:

Public-private partnerships to promote Warrington and facilitate a dialogue between the Council and private sector businesses (Warrington 2000+ and subgroups)

Inward investment activity is focused around the 558-acre Omega development site which will create in excess of 12,000 jobs, and is of regional and national significance. Specific sectors being targeted are pharmaceutical/medical, IT/data sciences, biotechnology, telecoms, advanced automotive. The establishment of xpdia will help Warrington to achieve its goal of creating a world-class centre for telecoms in the town. It is also hoped that companies based within the accelerator may be amongst the first occupiers of premises on Omega.
